Justification, validation, quality assurance of software. It is possible to identify three different critical aspects (or phase) in the use of computer programs: during each and every phase the user must employ careful precautions if dangerous errors are to be avoided in the results of the simulation.

Following the first and the second Benchmark Workshop, held in Bergamo (Italy at ISMES, this third session has further developed exercises on Concrete Dams (theme A) and Embankment Dams (theme B).

The second international Benchmark-Workshop on Numerical Analysis of Dams follows, at little more than one year interval, the first one also in Bergamo from 28th to 29 May 1991.

The new ICOLD Committee for Computational Aspects of Dam Analysis and Design, appointed in the 1987 Executive Meeting of Beijing, addressed its attention to the more pressing needs of the dam engineer’s profession in this field.
