The purpose of the Workshop was to provide a critical examination of the computational methods and software used for dam analysis. For this purpose some specific problems in concrete and embankment dams were formulated and the participants were invited to provide solution of the problems that will be comparatively evaluated during the Workshop.

Although just a few Italian dams have been found affected by the alkali-aggregate reaction phenomenon (AAR), quite a number of dams underwent rehabilitation works because of the structural effects due to AAR.

The objective of the Benchmark-Workshop corresponds to some Ad-Hoc Committee’s Terms of Reference.

Evaluation of AAR (Alkali – Aggregate Reaction) effects on the structural behaviour of an arch dam: interpretation of the measured behaviour and forecasting of the future trend.

Consistent with previous Workshops, four problems were feature, two on concrete dams and two on embankment dams. Computational analyses of the problems were submitted in advance to the problem formulators and presented during the Workshop.

Justification, validation, quality assurance of software. It is possible to identify three different critical aspects (or phase) in the use of computer programs: during each and every phase the user must employ careful precautions if dangerous errors are to be avoided in the results of the simulation.

Following the first and the second Benchmark Workshop, held in Bergamo (Italy at ISMES, this third session has further developed exercises on Concrete Dams (theme A) and Embankment Dams (theme B).

The second international Benchmark-Workshop on Numerical Analysis of Dams follows, at little more than one year interval, the first one also in Bergamo from 28th to 29 May 1991.
